Fact Check: Has Mohammed Shami Released Video On Champions Trophy ‘Sports Drink’ Row?

A video clip of Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has gone viral on social media, with claims that it shows him explaining why he broke his fast (Roza) during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The Verdict: False

The original 2024 video shows Shami wishing people for Eid. A fake voiceover was added to falsely claim he spoke about breaking his fast.

What is the claim?

A video clip of Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has gone viral on social media, with claims that it shows him explaining why he broke his fast (Roza) during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In the clip, Shami allegedly says in Hindi:

“Yes, I broke Roza that day. Muslim brothers and sisters, please don’t get me wrong; I didn’t do it on purpose. I was forced to break Roza. Otherwise, they would have destroyed my career. I apologise to my Muslim brothers and sisters again.”

The clip has been widely shared with captions such as “Mohammed Shami talked about the reason for breaking his fast... Mohammed Shami apologised…” (archived here). Other users have posted similar claims, including “Mohammed Shami apologising”. Archive links for the posts can be found here, here, here, and here

The video gained traction after an image of Shami drinking an energy drink during India’s ICC Champions Trophy semi-final match against Australia in Dubai on March 4, 2025, went viral. In response, All India Muslim Jamaat president and cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi stated that Shami had “committed a crime” by not fasting during Ramzan (a holy month when many Muslims fast from dawn to sunset).

However, we found that the video is edited, and Shami has not made any such statement about breaking his fast.

What are the facts?

A reverse image search led us to the original version of the video (archived here), posted on Shami’s verified Instagram account on April 11, 2024. The caption read: “Wishing the magic of Eid bring never-ending happiness, peace, and prosperity in your life. Eid Mubarak!”

In the unedited video, Shami says: “Wishing you Eid Mubarak from my family, friends, and me. Enjoy the sweetness of Eid, today is Eid, keep enjoying the festival to its fullest.”

News24 also posted the same video on April 11, 2024, stating (archived here), “On Eid al-Fitr, cricketer Mohammed Shami extended wishes for Eid in this manner.”

This confirms that the viral clip has been manipulated. The original video of Shami wishing his followers on Eid has been overlaid with a fabricated audio recording falsely attributing statements about breaking his fast.

The verdict

The viral video claiming Mohammed Shami explained his reasons for breaking his fast during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final and apologised to the Muslim community is edited. The original video, in which Shami extends Eid greetings in 2024, has been altered with a fake voiceover to misrepresent his words.
