Fact Check: Elon Musk Didn’t Make X post Saying He ‘Got Trump Elected’

The viral image appears as an X post published via Elon Musk's official X account. It reads, ‘Lib media already trying to create a schism between me and Trump…’

The Verdict: False

A fake screenshot claims Elon Musk posted on X about media creating a “schism” with Donald Trump. It originated from a satirical subreddit.

Context

Tesla CEO Elon Musk did not post a message on X saying that the media is “trying to create a schism” between him and US President-elect Donald Trump, contrary to a screenshot that began circulating on social media platforms in mid-November.

The image appears as an X post published via Musk's official X account. It reads, "Lib media already trying to create a schism between me and Trump, saying I'm overstaying my welcome at Mar a Lago, that I'm annoying him, ha!!! Trump and I are as solid as can be. He knows I got him elected and he's going to do anything I tell him to do."

One user shared the fake post on Threads (archived here) and questioned, "Anyone know if this is real or fake?" Another iteration of the screenshot on X (archived here) gathered more than 160,000 views.

In fact

No such post is visible on Musk's X account, and there are no credible media reports on the supposed post to date.

The earliest iteration Logically Facts found of the screenshot was posted on Reddit through the subreddit r/ToiletPaperUSA. It carries a description saying that all posts published in the subreddit should be considered as "ironic/parodic/satirical unless they are flaired [sic] as *REAL* *and* have a relevant, trustworthy source in the comments (which should be your standard for all internet content anyway)."

The post (archived here), published on November 16, was titled, "Elon claims he's the real boss," and tagged with the phrase, "Fake News." The Reddit account that posted the screenshot holds a description that says they are a "fake tweet writer."

In a statement on Truth Social on November 12, Trump named Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy co-leaders of an initiative to boost government efficiency.

The fake post may refer to reports by media outlets such as NBC News, which reported on November 13, citing two unnamed sources, that Musk may be "overstaying his welcome" at Trump's Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago. Newsweek reported on November 15 that Trump joked that he couldn't get Musk "out of here" during an event held at Mar-a-Lago.

The verdict

A screenshot appearing as a post published by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on X saying that the media is trying to "create a schism" between him and Republican president-elect Donald Trump is fake. The earliest iteration Logically Facts found of the post was published on a satirical subreddit on November 16.
