Year Ender 2022: Indian Films Which Crossed The Rs. 100 CR Mark

From 'Pushpa' to 'KGF: Chapter 2' to 'Kantara' and 'RRR', films from the Southern film industry have changed the box office game in 2022.

New Delhi: 2022 has been a momentous year for Bollywood and the Indian fim industry in general. Audiences have seen Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films do much better at the box office than the conventional Hindi bandwagon. From 'Pushpa' to 'KGF: Chapter 2' to 'Kantara' and 'RRR', films from the Southern film industry have changed the box office game in 2022. Not only has the audience's taste changed drastically after the pandemic but also viewers have also begun watching content in regional languages, and thus appreciating variety. Here is taking a look at the top films which cross the Rs. 100 CR mark in 2022.

1. KGF: Chapter 2

Yash aka Rocky Bhai returned with the second installment of the superhit 'KGF: Chapter 1' and created havoc at the box office. 'KGF: 2' released on April 14, 2022 and starred Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty and Prakash Raj in key roles. The film was released in Hindi, Tami, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. 'KGF: Chapter 2' collected Rs. 1250 crores at the box office.

2. RRR

This SS Rajamouli film which is currently in the race for Oscars and recently won the filmmaker the Best Director accolade from the New York Critics Circle also did wonders at the box office. Not just in India, 'RRR' also was a blockbuster in the USA where it was also re-released in select thetares. 

Starring  N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, 'RRR' released in Tamil, Hindi, Japanese, Kannada and Telugu. The film collected Rs. 1200 crores at the box office.

3. Ponniyon Selvan 1

Mani Ratnam's ensemble period drama starring the likes of Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj broke multiple box office records and collected Rs. 500 crores at the box office. The film was released in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

4. Vikram

Kamal Haasan starrer 'Vikram' released on June 3, 2022 and also smashed many box office records. The film earned around Rs. 500 crores globally and received appreciation for its music, screenplay and performances by actors. 'Vikram' originally released in Tamil was also dubbed in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film also starred Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil.

5. Brahmastra: Part One-Shiva

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer 'Brahmastra' was embroiled in controversy throughout the promotion cycle and yet managed to earn Rs. 431 crores at the box office. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Shah Rukh Khan and Mouni Roy. 'Brahmastra' released on September 9, 2022 and was also dubbed in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

6. Kantara

Rishab Shetty directorial 'Kantara' became a huge success at the box office. Initally released in Kannada, and later in other languages, Kantara's success came as a surprise to many. The film collected Rs. 407 crores at the box office and released on September 30, 2022.

7. The Kashmir Files

Again a mid-budget film, Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Kashmir Files' became a sleeper hit when it released earlier in 2022. The film also created high expectations for subsequent Bollywood releases which underperformed at the box office. As per reports, the film earned around Rs. 340 crores at the box office.

8. Drishyam 2

Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Akshaye Khanna and Tabu starrer 'Drishyam 2' also created havoc at the box office. Released on October 18, 2022, the film collected Rs. 278 crores approx. at the time of writing this article. 'Drishyam 2' was the sequel of 'Drishyam' which released in 2015.

9. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani starrer 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' had great expectations and the film met most of them. The Anees Bazmee directorial earned Rs. 266.88 crores at the box office.

10. Gangubai Kathiawadi

Led by Alia Bhatt, this Sanjay Leela Bhasali drama earned around Rs. 200 crores globally as per reprots. The film was inspired by the real-life story of a sex worker who lobbied for the rights of sex workers when it was unheard of in India.

Besides the mentioned films, many other films also broke the Rs. 100 crore mark in 2022.
