New Delhi: Actor Suriya's 'Jai Bhim' earned the Best Feature Film award at the 12th Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival. This international festival is different from the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award conferred by the Government of India.


Suriya's production house 2D Entertainment shared the news of this victory on its official Twitter handle where it wrote, :#JaiBhim wins the Best Film & Best Supporting Actor awards at the #DadaSahebPhalkeFilmFestival Thank you @dadasahebfest for the honour! Congratulations #Manikandan on winning the Best Supporting actor (sic)."


Manikandan also won the Best Supporting Actor award for his moving performance of a victim of police brutality in the film.


'Jai Bhim' features Suriya, Lijomol Jose and Manikandan in the roles of Advocate Chandru, Sengeni and Rasakannu.The film has also been produced by Suriya and directed by Tha Se Gnanavel.


'Jai Bhim' is inspired by a real-life case handled by the retired Madras High Court Judge K Chandru. A court-room drama that depicts the story of a poor tribal man who is falsely accused of robbery goes missing from police custody. An activist-lawyer then takes up his case after the missing man's wife seeks the lawyer's help for justice.


The film has been highly praised by critics for its story, direction and performances by actors so much so that it has also been called one of the best Indian films of 2021.


The Tamil film was shortlisted among the 276 films eligible for nomination at the 94th Academy Awards but failed to make to the final list of nominations.


'Jai Bhim' is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
