The box office has witnessed fireworks with the release of 'Vettaiyan', which marks the coming together of two legendary stars, Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan. The Tamil action drama had a strong start, recording the second-best opening for a Tamil film this year, following Vijay’s 'The Greatest of All Time (GOAT)'.
Vettaiyan box office collection day 1
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, 'Vettaiyan' collected Rs 30 crore in all-India nett on its opening day, with Tamil Nadu contributing the bulk at Rs 26 crore. The Telugu version added just over Rs 3 crore to the total. However, the Hindi version was not released in national chains due to ongoing disputes over the OTT window, which may affect the film's overall box office potential, as Amitabh Bachchan remains a big draw for Hindi-speaking audiences.
Despite its strong start, Vettaiyan’s collections fall short when compared to Rajinikanth’s previous blockbuster, 'Jailer', which opened to Rs 48 crore, including Rs 37 crore from Tamil Nadu alone—more than Vettaiyan's all-India total.

Jailer, directed by Nelson, benefited from a larger hype, while Vettaiyan, helmed by TJ Gnanavel of Jai Bhim fame, is described as a more grounded commercial entertainer.
Rajinikanth’s star power remains undeniable, as Vettaiyan’s nearly Rs 30 crore opening day haul demonstrates. However, it trails behind Vijay’s GOAT, which debuted at Rs 44 crore, with Tamil Nadu contributing over Rs 39 crore.
The film will need steady collections on Friday, followed by a hoped-for surge over the weekend, with positive word-of-mouth playing a crucial role. If well-received, Vettaiyan could capitalize on the Dussehra holiday period.
GOAT ended its theatrical run with around Rs 250 crore domestically, while Jailer grossed nearly Rs 100 crore more. The coming days will reveal if Vettaiyan can rival Rajinikanth’s biggest box office hits.
