New Delhi: Starting on June 7, SonyLIV will offer streaming of '2018', the all-time biggest blockbuster in Malayalam film. The streaming service has chosen to release the movie despite its success in theatres. Fans of 2018 are a little unhappy with the OTT release, even though it is good news for those who can't see the movie on the big screen.
A Reddit user wrote, “Very disappointed, it’s too soon and should’ve been postponed…I had a big wish that the movie could’ve got a final maximum gross of 100 crore, from Kerala. At this rate, the maximum gross will be 90 crores.”
Another wrote, “Why so fast? BO is still strong! Also, they just released in other languages. At least give it time to catch up with word of mouth or something. Now all will be waiting for OTT!”
The Malayalam film industry, which has been facing a tough time in terms of box office success, heaved a sigh of relief with the survivor thriller '2018 -Everyone Is A Hero' starring Tovino Thomas. Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film has had a dream run at the box office and has minted Rs 100 crore club globally. With this, the film has become the fastest Malayalam film to enter Rs 100 crore club.
Talking about the OTT release of 2018, Joseph said, “2018: Everyone is a Hero is a homage to the collective experience of the people of Kerala during the 2018 floods and to be able to bring it to the screen and see the kind of love it has been receiving has been a truly fulfilling experience. Through this film, we aimed to commemorate the heroism and courage shown by every individual during the catastrophe. With the film now set to stream on SonyLIV, more and more people get to witness our story and the extraordinary spirit of humanity that helped the state triumph.”
The film is centered around stories of humanity triumphing over adversity in the backdrop of the 2018 floods that devastated parts of Kerala. It is the second Tovino project to attract national attention and draw an adulatory audience response after the 2021 superhero movie 'Minnal Murali'. And it also brings back memories of his performance in 'Virus', the 2019 film about the Nipah outbreak in Kerala.
In the film, he plays a young man who leaves the Indian Army with a fake medical certificate and redeems himself during the floods.
