Salim Durani Death: Did You Know The Cricket Legend Starred In These Bollywood Movies

Cricket legend Salim Durani made his cinematic debut in 1969 with 'Ek Masoom', opposite Tanuja.

New Delhi: Former India cricketer Salim Durani passed away on Sunday at the age of 88. The Kabul-born cricketer was renowned for his slow left-arm orthodox and hitting skill as a batter. In 29 Tests, he picked 75 wickets including three five-wicket hauls. He was living with his younger brother, Jahangir Durrani, in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Durrani was one of the first Indian cricketers to endorse products and was popular with the general public thanks to his alluring charm and beautiful looks. This soon included movie offers. He made his cinematic debut in 1969 with 'Ek Masoom', playing Tanuja's opposite. In the Khalid Akhtar movie, Helen, Prem Chopra, Jagdeep, and Abhi Bhattacharya also starred. He made one more appearance on the big screen in 1973, just as his international cricket career was coming to an end. In the film 'Charitra', he was seen opposite Parveen Babi.

Salim Durani's aggressive batting style and left-arm spin bowling helped India to several triumphs. He was a key player in India's maiden Test victory in the West Indies in 1971, when Durani produced a remarkable spell that included the quick dismissals of players like Clive Lloyd and Garry Sobers. India went on to defeat Spain by seven wickets in the Port of Spain Test, and Durani only allowed 21 runs to be scored in his 17 overs of bowling.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to his Twitter handle and posted a heartfelt tribute to the former Indian cricketer.

"Salim Durani Ji was a cricketing legend, an institution in himself. He made a key contribution to India’s rise in the world of cricket. On and off the field, he was known for his style. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace", honorable PM wrote.
