At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel shocked and delighted fans with the revelation that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But this time he's playing Doctor Doom, one of Marvel's interesting supervillains, rather than Tony Stark, or Iron Man, his renowned character from earlier in his films. Famous for their work on big Marvel Cinematic Universe films like 'Avengers: Endgame’, the Russo Brothers are ready to helm the upcoming film dubbed 'Avengers: Doomsday.'

Return of Robert Downey Jr With A New Role

In the 2019 movie 'Avengers: Endgame,' Robert Downey Jr.'s character, Tony Stark, made the ultimate sacrifice to rescue the universe. This was his last appearance as Stark. Five years later, the news of his return to the Marvel fanbase as the villain Doctor Doom, rather than the adored hero, caught everyone by surprise.

A member of the Russo Brothers, Anthony Russo, said during the SDCC panel, “If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen — he is one of the most complex characters, most entertaining characters in all of fiction. If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”

Who is Doctor Doom?

Victor Von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, made his debut in  'Fantastic Four #5' in 1962. Being the main enemy in the 'Fantastic Four' series, he is renowned for his wit, technological prowess, and magical abilities. Tragically, a tragedy left Doom emotionally wounded, which shaped his vicious quest for power, and physically disfigured him, making him wear a mask.

Doctor Doom is both a frightening and fascinating figure in the Marvel canon because of his complicated personality.

The Connection Between Iron Man and Doctor Doom

The forthcoming film may or may not have a clear relationship between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom; since the Russo Brothers have not confirmed this. Although, there is a significant connection in the comic books. After Tony Stark dies in ‘Civil War II’, Doctor Doom takes the identity of Iron Man in the 2017 Marvel comic book storyline "Infamous Iron Man" written by Brian Michael Bendis.

Adding an intriguing new dimension to Doom's character, this arc delves into his journey to become a hero. 'Avengers: Doomsday' fans are thinking this plot may have an impact on the film, suggesting a narrative that connects Robert Downey's previous role to his current one.

More Speculations about Doctor Doom

Many wonder whether Doctor Doom will be seen as a whole new character or if he will have any connection to Tony Stark's story. Intriguingly, this riddle heightens the anticipation for the film. The casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom has undoubtedly set the scene for a highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe feature.

Fans are anxiously anticipating the release of 'Avengers: Doomsday' in theatres on May 1, 2026, to see the developments of this new chapter as Marvel embarks on what may be its most daring venture so far.
