It was back in 2011, when we all were celebrating the Indian cricket team reaching the finals of the World Cup Cricket. This was Poonam’s first tryst with controversy and fame. She hogged instant spotlight owing to her promise to strip down to naked if India won the World Cup. That promise, however, remained unfulfilled as she, reportedly, did not get the permission from BCCI to strip.Her statement had created a stir on the internet back then with everyone talking about the controversial model. Earlier this year in February, Poonam Pandey filed a complaint in the Bombay High Court against actress Shilpa Shetty's husband, businessman Raj Kundra, and his associates. Pandey has alleged that Kundra and his associates have been illegally using content featuring her even after a contract between the two parties was terminated. She also alleged that Kundra has been using the content and minting money. The actress stated that over a period of six months she has been getting obscene calls.

This was probably the biggest controversy surrounding Poonam Pandey when a morphed picture featuring her nude, next to cricketer Sachin morphed as a Hindu God and a Pakistani cricketer bowing down to him appeared in a leading daily. Poonam Pandey had once shared a tweet, that stated, "Attitude is like your underwear; you must wear it, but never show it.” The tweet didn’t really go well with writer Taslima Nasreen who lashed out at her on social media. Taslima got so irked with Poonam’s tweet that she wrote, "Poonam Pandey got naked but not satisfied. She wanna do dirtiest things none did before. Wants to get f****d in public!"
Poonam too reacted back to her tweet and wrote, "F*ck what people say... Do YOU. Some people will hate you for it, but it's the ones that love you for it that are more important."
