Chennai: The veteran actor SP Balasubrahmanyam has been laid to rest at Thamaraipakkam village of Thiruvallore district. After the ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ singer’s body was brought to his residence from the hospital yesterday, his fans were allowed to have a last glimpse of the veteran singer. His mortal remains were then taken to his farmhouse later in the evening in a van to his farmhouse at Thamaraipakkam.

SP Balasubrahmanyam’s body was lowered into a dug-up pit with police honours. The singer’s family performed his last rites thereby putting an end to a great musical era.

Also, on account of the legendary singer’s funeral, elaborate security arrangements were made and around 500 police personnel were deployed. To take care of the traffic issues, a separate traffic police team was also present.

Hundreds of people were present at his farmhouse who stood in a long queue to pay their last respects to the late singer.




Veteran director Bharathiraja and singer Mano attended the funeral. The director was also present at the hospital last evening. Andhra Pradesh Minister Anil Kumar also paid his last respects to the late singer.

Born on June 4, 1946, in Nellore, SP Balasubrahmanyam recorded 40,000 songs in 16 languages and held the Guinness World Record for recording the highest number of songs. The veteran singer was also a recipient of civilian awards such as ‘Padma Shri’ and ‘Padma Bhushan’ from the Government of India.

His health deteriorated on August 5 and he was admitted to the ICU in MGM Healthcare in Chennai after testing positive for COVID-19. Though he defeated the virus on September 8, he succumbed to a cardio-respiratory attack.

Besides being a fantastic singer, SPB was also a music director, an actor, and a producer. He is survived by his wife Savitri, daughter Pallavi and son SP Charan, who is also a singer and a producer.
