'Emergency' In Trouble? SGPC Committee Demands Ban On Kangana Ranaut's Political Drama

Kangana Ranaut and her upcoming political period film 'Emergency', which is based on the political unrest of 1975, have faced allegations of hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs.

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and her upcoming political period film 'Emergency', which is based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the political unrest of 1975, have faced allegations of hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs. Just days before its release, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Akal Takht have called for an immediate ban on the movie. They have also demanded that an FIR be filed against the actress-turned-politician for allegedly attempting to "character assassinate" the Sikh community.

SGPC demands ban on Kangana Ranaut's Emergency

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami held a press conference on Wednesday, urging swift action against Kangana and her film. He asserted that the upcoming period drama misrepresents the Sikh community. During the press conference, he also criticized the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), calling it ‘biased,’ and urged that members of the Sikh community be included on the censor board.

Akal Takht head Gyani Raghbir Singh expressed similar concerns, claiming the movie is part of a "deep conspiracy." He stated, “The community can never forget the anti-Sikh brutality of June 1984, and Ranaut’s film is trying to character assassinate Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, who has been declared a Qaumi Shaheed (community’s martyr) by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.” Singh has called for an FIR against Kangana for “inciting religious sentiments of Sikhs” through her work on 'Emergency'. He also referred to previous controversial remarks made by the actress against the Sikh community.

About Emergency

The political drama, directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, is set during the 1975 Emergency in India. Kangana plays the role of Indira Gandhi, and the film also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and Milind Soman. Previously, Kangana described the movie as depicting "the darkest times of democratic Indian history and the lust for power that almost burned down the nation."

Emergency is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 6, 2024.
