New Delhi: Rishi Kapoor, who was considered Bollywood’s original ‘Chocolate Boy’ passed away in the morning today. He was diagnosed with Bone Marrow Cancer in 2018, after successful treatment in the US, he returned to India in 2019. Due to breathing difficulty, he was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai yesterday.   His first-ever on-screen presence was in the 1955 film Shree 420, but his first debut was as a supporting character in the 1970 movie Mera Naam Joker in which he played his father's younger self.

We look back at some of his most memorable roles:

  • Bobby (1973) – He made his debut alongside Dimple Kapadia in this gripping teenage love story, it became the biggest hit, changing the very cultural fabric of the society. The movie was released in the Russian Federation as well in the year 1975 and very well received in Russian cinema.

  • Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) - The plot focuses on three brothers who are separated in childhood and adopted by three families of different faiths—Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity.

  • Sargam (1979) – It was a remake of the Telugu film Siri Siri Muvva (1976), the story follows a mute dancer who falls in love with a tambourine player played by Rishi Kapoor. The film is known mostly for its music, Rishi Kapoor was nominated for Best Actor Filmfare Awards for this role.

  • Karz (1980) – The movie considered a turning point in Rishi Kapoor’s career, the reincarnation thriller film is about Monty played by Rishi Kapoor who discovers the shocking truth about his past life when he was killed by his gold-digger wife, while his family was rendered homeless. For the famous song, ‘Dard-e-dil’ Subhash Ghai decided not to go with a choreographer but still remains to be one of the most memorable songs from the movie.

  • Nagina (1986) – The story revolves around Rajni, a naagin who marries a civilian played by Rishi Kapoor to avenge the death of her spouse at the hands of an evil saint.

  • Chandni (1989) – He played one of the two suitors for Sridevi in the movie, who after a complicated affair with Lalit falls back in love with Rohit, Rishi Kapoor’s character. The movie was another example of Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor’s chemistry! 

  • Bol Radha Bol (1992) – In the movie, he plays a wealthy businessman who during a business visit in a village falls in love with a village belle. The movie became the highest-grossing movie that year and was critically acclaimed for both the protagonists’ acting.

  • Damini (1993) - The story is about how a woman fights against society for justice. The film is considered to be one of the best women-centric films ever made in Bollywood. Rishi Kapoor plays Shekhar Damini’s husband who helps his family cover up the rape of the maid. He made a tweet regarding the Nirbhaya case quoting the famous “tareek pe tareek” line.

  • Do Dooni Chaar - The film is about a middle-class school teacher played by Rishi Kapoor who tries to keep his wife and children happy in inflationary times and dreams of buying a car. For his performance, he won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor in 2011.

  • Kapoor and Sons (2017) - Rishi Kapoor reinvented himself, by playing the formidable granddad to Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan in ‘Kapoor and Sons’. He won Best Supporting Actor and Comic Role for this performance in the Filmfare.
