Kangana Ranaut's journey as an actor-filmmaker-politician has been nothing short of tumultuous, especially as she prepared for the release of her directorial debut, Emergency. After facing numerous delays and rescheduled release dates, the film is finally set to hit theaters on January 17. To build anticipation, the makers have released the trailer, which encapsulates the essence of Emergency.

Emergency Trailer 2

The trailer opens with Anupam Kher’s portrayal of Jayaprakash Narayan, writing to Kangana Ranaut’s Indira Gandhi, reminding her that the position of Prime Minister is no longer just a throne, but a fierce lion whose roar will resonate globally. This sets the stage for Indira Gandhi's decision to declare a national emergency, a pivotal moment in India’s post-independence history. The trailer is laden with imagery of institutional brutality, systemic violence, and the 'murder of democracy.'

At the heart of the film is Indira Gandhi, described by the makers as “India’s most iconic… and controversial leader,” who passionately declares, “SHE is the cabinet.” This sets up a narrative that promises to delve into the darker chapters of India’s past, exposing the consequences of the former Prime Minister’s actions and the political maneuvering that led to such a pivotal decision.

The trailer also introduces notable figures such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Shreyas Talpade), Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (Milind Soman), and Sanjay Gandhi (Vishak Nair), who seamlessly embody their respective roles. While Kangana certainly looks the part of Indira Gandhi, her attempt to replicate the former Prime Minister’s voice might feel a bit off-putting. However, it may resonate more naturally in the context of the full film. For now, it’s evident that Emergency will explore the conviction with which Indira Gandhi famously declared, “India is Indira… Indira is India…”

With music by GV Prakash Kumar and a score by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara, Emergency is both written and directed by Kangana, with Ritesh Shah credited for the screenplay. Produced by Kangana's Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios, the film also features performances from Mahima Chaudhary and Satish Kaushik.
