New Delhi: Renowned cinematographer Nadeem Khan underwent brain surgery at Mumbai’s Lilavati hospital after he suffered a fall. Nadeem, son of Hindi novelist and scriptwriter Rahi Masoom Raza, was admitted to the hospital on Monday (May 5) after he fell from a flight of stairs. He suffered injuries in head, shoulder and chest.

When ABP News contacted Nadeem Khan’s wife Parvati Khan to know about his current condition, she spoke about the delay in her husband’s treatment and brain surgery.

Parvati, while talking to ABP News’ correspondent Ravi Jain, said, “Nadeem needed immediate surgery because of severe head injury and heavy bleeding. However, the doctors first tested him for Coronavirus. Two days later when his result came out to be negative, then the doctors performed his brain surgery. Nadeem's condition became worse as he had lost a lot of blood from his head. If his surgery was done immediately, then he would be in better shape.”

She further said, "It took a lot of time to admit Nadeem to the hospital. During this time, he was not given any pain relief pills. He was admitted to the hospital after two hours and the medical team took him directly to the COVID-19 ward for the test. I have to tell you that my husband didn’t even step out of our house building in the last two months.”

"I understand that due to the increasing cases of Coronavirus, the patients have to get tested before getting admitted to any hospital. The doctors have to follow these rules made by the hospital administration. However, the hospital must treat patients suffering from heart and brain related ailments on an immediate basis. Rapid testing for Coronavirus should be done in such cases."

When ABP News contacted Dr. V. Ravi Shankar, CEO of Lilavati hospital, regarding these allegations, he opened up on the delay in treatment.

"I took personal interest in Nadeem Khan's case and ensured that his COVID-19 test was taken as soon as possible. After taking the test, we sent his sample to a private lab so that the result could come out as quickly as possible. It takes at least 48 hours to get the result; however, I made sure that we could get his result early, so that his brain surgery could be done on time. I had made all the arrangements for this. Treatment of any patient is not possible without the COVID-19 test in current times. In case, any patient is found to be Coronavirus positive, there is a high chance of him/her infecting the medical staff in the hospital. If this happens, we have to close the hospital,” Shankar said.

Nadeem Khan has worked as a cinematographer for over 40 films, including ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Iljam’, ‘Jurm’ and ‘Gunah’. He directed a film titled 'Tirchhi Topiwale'. Nadeem Khan was also associated with the popular serial ‘Chandrakanta’ in 1994 as director of photography.
