Remake Of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Cult Classic 'Bawarchi' To Be Helmed By Anushree Mehta

The family comedy-drama boasted an ensemble cast led by actors Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachchan, and Asrani, among others. 'Bawarchi' was itself a remake of the 1966 Bengali film 'Galpo Holeo Satti'.

New Delhi: Filmmaker Anushree Mehta, who made a dazzling debut with the Radhika Apte starrer 'Mrs Undercover' last year, is now set to helm the Hindi remake of the beloved 1972 classic 'Bawarchi,' originally directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

The family comedy-drama boasted an ensemble cast led by actors Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachchan, and Asrani, among others. 'Bawarchi' was itself a remake of the 1966 Bengali film 'Galpo Holeo Satti,' starring Rabi Ghosh and directed by Tapan Sinha.

This adaptation of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's masterpiece marks the inaugural film in a three-film collaboration between Jaadugar Films and Sameer Raj Sippy Productions. The endeavor also includes remakes of timeless classics such as Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan's 'Mili' (1975) and Gulzar's iconic 1972 drama 'Koshish.'

Anushree Mehta On 'Bawarchi' Remake

Describing the direction of the 'Bawarchi' adaptation as a "kaleidoscopic combination" of excitement, honor, and humility, Anushree Mehta said, "When my business partner Abir Sengupta (Jaadugar Films), Sameer Raj Sippy, and I decided to collaborate on these three iconic films, we were determined to remake them with utmost love and respect. During our discussions on 'Bawarchi,' Abir and Sameer suggested that I should write and direct the remake."

"They believed that I could narrate the story in a manner that would do justice to the original. We shared a vision, and I wholeheartedly agreed to come on board as the writer-director," the filmmaker added.

While remaking a cherished classic like 'Bawarchi' entails a significant responsibility, Anushree ensured that the adaptation would reflect her "confidence, honesty, and sensitivity."

"The essence of retelling a film lies in adapting it to contemporary times and making it relevant to today's world—while preserving the soul and essence of the original. Since 'Bawarchi' itself was a remake of a Bengali film, Hrishida recreated it and made it relevant to his era."

"My aim is to follow a similar approach, retelling the timeless story of 'Bawarchi' in a manner that resonates with family audiences of all ages. I aspire to craft an enriching, unforgettable family experience," she emphasized.

Anushree Mehta has completed the screenplay for the 'Bawarchi' adaptation and aims to commence filming in 2024. Casting for the film is in progress, with the producers seeking to secure a top-tier star.
