Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to his official Twitter handle to share the news. He also posted a picture of the team of the sequel which has Sunny donning a sikh turban and Ameesha with a dupatta on her head.
"SUNNY DEOL, ANIL SHARMA, ZEE: 'GADAR 2' 80% COMPLETE... #Gadar2 - the sequel to #Gadar, starring #SunnyDeol, #AmeeshaPatel and #UtkarshSharma - is 80% complete, after #Lucknow shoot... Directed by #AnilSharma... Produced by #ZeeStudios and #AnilSharmaProductions."
According to the announcement, 'Gadar 2' is being directed by Anil Sharma and produced by Zee Studios and Anil Sharma Productions. Anil Sharma also directed the first film of the Gadar franchise.
Actor and politician Sunny Deol played the role of Tara Singh in 'Gadar'( 2001) who gets married to Sakina( Ameesha Patel) during the partition of India in 1947. Both live happily until Sakina's father forces her to return to Pakistan. The ensuing events were part of the film that received a mixed response from critics.
Despite that, Gadar's box office collection then was Rs. 768.8 million. The film was produced on a budget of Rs.190 million and clashed with Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Lagaan'.
Back in the 90s' after 'Hum Apke Hain Koun...', 'Gadar' became the second-highest grossing film. According to BoxOfficeIndia, 'Gadar' is the second-most watched Hindi film of all time since the 90s, recording more than 50 million footfalls in India.
'Gadar' was loosely based on the life of Boota Singh, a Sikh ex-soldier of the British Army who served under the command of Lord Mountbatten during World War II. His life story is well-known and documented for having rescued a Muslim girl during the Partition of India and getting married to her.
However, when the same girl (Zainab) is deported to Pakistan and due to family pressure, backs off, Boota Singh committs suicide by jumping in front of a train. This is again a contented story.
Audiences will have to wait to see what 'Gadar 2' is going to be all about.
