‘I Was 50 Kg’: Singer Recalls Industry Pressure at a Young Age
In a candid conversation on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s podcast, Neha revisited a harrowing incident from 2003, just a year after she rose to fame through the reality show Coke [V] Popstars. She revealed that she was forced onto fat burners at the age of 20, without understanding their effects.
Recounting the humiliation, Neha said, “A man from the channel projected a video in a conference room, circled my stomach, and said, ‘See, you are so fat. Because of this, we can’t release the video.’ I was 50 kg at that time.”
“I remember going home and, in anger, consuming more than half a bottle of fat burners. That was my way of trying to commit suicide. For two days, I was throwing up. The band didn’t know what had happened,” she added.
Battling PMDD and Hormonal Imbalance for Years
Over the years, Neha has become increasingly vocal about her mental and physical health struggles. In 2024, she opened up on social media about living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) — a severe condition that has affected her since her teens. In 2022, she was also diagnosed with low progesterone, which she said significantly impacts her ability to function for nearly half of each month.
Neha Bhasin’s Journey: From Viva to Solo Stardom
Neha first gained national attention as a member of Viva, formed through the reality TV show Popstars in 2002. After the band disbanded, she carved out a successful solo career, delivering hit tracks in Bollywood, Tollywood, and independent music. Known for her versatility and fearless style, Neha has sung in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Punjabi.
Some of her most acclaimed songs include Kuch Khaas (Fashion), Jag Ghoomeya (Sultan), Dhunki (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan), and Asalaam-e-Ishqum (Gunday). She also gained public attention for her appearances in 'Bigg Boss OTT' and 'Bigg Boss 15' in 2021.
Neha’s revelations underscore the toxic beauty standards that continue to plague the entertainment industry — and highlight the importance of mental health conversations in public spaces.
