The death of legendary tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain has left the entire nation in shock. People from all walks of life are mourning his passing and offering heartfelt condolences to his family. Music composer AR Rahman also paid tribute to the late maestro.

On Monday, Rahman shared a series of pictures with Ustad Zakir Hussain on Instagram, accompanied by flower and prayer emojis to express his grief and respect.

AR Rahman pays tribute to Zakir Hussain

Earlier on Monday, Rahman took to his X account to share how significant Zakir was to the world of music. He described the loss as “immeasurable” and reflected on Zakir's inspiration to millions.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Zakir Bhai was an inspiration, a towering personality who elevated the tabla to global acclaim. His loss is immeasurable for all of us,” Rahman wrote.

 

Rahman further revealed that they had plans to work on an album together, adding, “I regret not being able to collaborate with him as much as we did decades ago, though we had planned an album together. You shall be truly missed. May his family and his countless students worldwide find the strength to bear this immense loss #ZakirHussain.”

Zakir Hussain Death

Ustad Zakir Hussain, who had been battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung condition, was a towering figure in Indian classical music and one of the most celebrated percussionists globally. He passed away in San Francisco, and his death was confirmed by Jon Bleicher of Prospect PR, speaking on behalf of the family.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the maestro’s demise. Sharing his grief on X, PM Modi described Zakir as a genius who transformed Indian classical music and gave the tabla global recognition.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji. He will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music. He also brought the tabla to the global stage, captivating millions with his unparalleled rhythm. Through this, he seamlessly blended Indian classical traditions with global music, thus becoming an icon of cultural unity,” PM Modi wrote.
