The Blackout 2024 movement began on social media a few months ago. The trend has been gaining traction on platforms like Tik Tok where users called out celebrities for not raising their voice on Israel's attacks on Gaza.
After the Met Gala 2024, the blackout list garnered more traction as netizens began sharing lists of blocked celebrities on different social media platforms.
The boycott attempts to bring these celebrities to the forefront where they can use their voice for a better purpose, like advocacy and urging calls for ceasefire between both nations.
This is also a digital protest where people across social media platforms are deliberately blocking celebrities for their silence on an important international topic and in some cases, their alleged backing of the conflict.
On the other hand, several celebrities have also taken a stand in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Actors such as Mark Ruffali, Ramy Youssef and John Cusack are among the many who have spoken against the war. Maheshala Ali, Billie Eilish, Finneas O'Connell recently wore red pins on the red carpet, signifying their reprot for Artists4Ceasefire at this year's Oscars ceremony.
