BAFTA Awards 2022: A Special Tribute To Lata Mangeshkar And Dilip Kumar Makes Fans Emotional
BAFTA 2022's 'In memoriam' segment, which aired last night, paid a tribute to the late singer Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar.
New Delhi: An emotional obituary accompanied a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) tribute to The Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar and legendary actor, Dilip Kumar.
In early January, Lata Mangeshkar was brought to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital for treatment after testing positive for COVID. Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 in February after struggling with COVID and pneumonia. The BAFTA website also paid tribute to the late Dilip Kumar, who passed away in July of 2021.
BAFTA 2022's online obituary for Lata Mangeshkar read, "An Indian playback singer, who recorded an estimated 25,000 songs for more than 1,000 Hindi films over a career spanning 70 years. Mangeshkar rarely appeared on screen, preferring instead to record the songs that other actors would later lipsync. She became the first Indian artist to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in 1974. Her film credits list is vast, but notable songs featured in Anamika (1973), Aasha (1980), Dil Se.. (1998) and Rang De Basanti (2006). In 2001, she was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna."
The BAFTA Awards 2022 was hosted in the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday, March 13th, this year. Beyond Mangeshkar, the 'In Memorium' portion paid homage to actors Sidney Poitier, director Ivan Reitman, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and performers Monica Vitti and Sally Kellerman, among others.
The selection of Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar in the BAFTA Awards touched many on Indian Twitter. A screenshot from the memorial montage was shared on Twitter by author Aseem Chhabra.
