Actress Rimi Sen Joins Congress Party, Former U'khand CM Harish Rawat Hails Her As 'Icon Of Change'

According to Rawat, Rimi Sen would become an icon for change and pave path for positive changes. The former CM expressed his joy over the actor's association with the Congress Party.

New Delhi: Bollywood actress Rimi Sen, whose real name is Subhamitra Sen, joined the Congress Party on Monday, February 7, in Uttarakhand. Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat, welcomed her into the Party.

According to Rawat, Rimi Sen would become an icon for change and pave path for positive changes. The former CM expressed his joy over the actor's association with the Congress Party.

Welcoming Rimi Sen in the party, Rawat said, "Rimi Sen is a renowned name in the film industry and former star icon of BJP. I am more than delighted to welcome her in the Congress Party, as she visits Uttarakhand to bring about an air of change."

The induction of Rimmi Sen, who is a Bengali, could be seen as an effort of the Congress to woo Bengali voters in the state, especially in the Udham Singh Nagar district.
The district has a sizable Bengali population. It is said that members of the community were settled in the region in 1951-52 after they had migrated from Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) after Partition.

More people came in the 1960s and after the 1971 India-Pakistan War that saw the defeat of Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh, according to reports. They were gradually settled in the Rudrapur and Shakti Farm area of the district. At present, Khatima, Nanakmatta, Sitarganj, Gadarpur, Bazpur are some other areas of US Nagar that have a considerable number of Bengalis.

Looking at Rimi Sen's acting career, she has been a part of popular Bollywood films like 'Hungama', 'Dhoom' and 'Golmaal' among others. She was also a part of  Salman Khan starrer 'Kyun Ki'. She also participated in the television reality show Bigg Boss in 2015.
