As India braces for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to choose 543 representatives, anticipation mounts as all eyes turn towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the much-awaited poll schedule.
Expected to unveil the dates for this monumental political event in the world's largest democracy within days, the ECI's announcement will trigger the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct. With the elections anticipated to occur in April-May, political parties are intensifying their efforts in the remaining weeks to present their strongest contenders.
Speculation abounds that the elections will follow a seven-phase format, akin to the 2019 elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a commanding victory with 303 seats, while the Congress trailed with 52 seats. Prime Minister Modi has set ambitious targets, aiming for 370 seats for the BJP and 400 for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), expressing hope for the Congress to secure at least 40 seats.
The 2014 general elections, conducted over nine phases from April 7 to May 12, marked a significant milestone in Indian democracy with 834 million registered voters, surpassing previous records. Results were declared on May 15, prior to the completion of the 15th Lok Sabha's term on May 31, with counting taking place at 989 centres. The BJP secured 282 seats with a 31% vote share, while the NDA collectively clinched 336 seats with a 38.5% vote share.
In addition to the Lok Sabha elections, several states including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim, Haryana, and Maharashtra are set for polls in 2024.
Major parties have commenced announcing their candidates for Lok Sabha constituencies. The BJP unveiled a list of 195 candidates last week, confirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's candidacy from Varanasi for a third term, alongside key figures like Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh. Smriti Irani, known for her upset victory in Amethi in 2019, is contesting again.
On March 8, the Congress released its first list of 39 candidates, featuring Rahul Gandhi among others. Trinamool Congress also announced its list of 42 candidates, with notable inclusions such as former cricketer Yusuf Pathan.
Subsequently, the Congress disclosed its second list of 43 candidates, covering seats across various states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, and Gujarat. The party is also contesting alongside INDIA bloc allies, with plans to contest on 24 seats in Gujarat.
In parallel, the BJP had previously declared candidates for 195 Lok Sabha seats on March 2, marking an early move in the electoral battleground.
