Uniform Civil Code A 'Necessity', Old Pension Scheme Not Shut Down: Himachal CM Jairam Thakur

Himachal Pradesh CM Jairam Thakur stated Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the state if BJP is voted back to power.

New Delhi: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Sunday said that implementation of the Uniform Civil Code was a necessity and the ruling BJP will ensure it if voted back to power.

His statement comes after BJP National President JP Nadda released the Election manifesto for the upcoming assembly election in the state. The 'Sankalp Patra' mentiones Uniform Civil Code as one of the poll promises.

“It’s very important. BJP is a national party and we feel it is a necessity. There are technical aspects but a committee will be constituted. We’ll go ahead on the path that will come out. Implementing UCC is our commitment and we’ll do it,” the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

CM Thakur also said that the Old Pension Scheme is not mentioned in the manifesto as it has not been shut completely.

“OPS (Old Pension Scheme) is a matter under consideration. We have not announced it but we are not shutting it down. The manner in which they are (congress) trying to do it, similar announcements were made by Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh 10 months ago. The papers have not even moved forward,” he further added.

The party chief explained the 11 commitments of the BJP which strives to remain in power.

JP Nadda stated, “First commitment is that the BJP government will bring Uniform Civil Code here. A committee of experts will be set up and according to their report, UCC will be implemented in Himachal. The second commitment is that the Rs 3000 per year will be added to the Mukhya Mantri Annadata Samman Nidhi, besides the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna. Nearly 10 lakh farmers will be connected with this”.

He said BJP will also increase employment opportunities in the state.
