Background
Haryana Election Exit Poll Highlights: With the elections over, the 90-member Haryana Assembly is set to get a new set of ruling and Opposition MLAs. The fate of all 1,031 candidates contesting the Haryana elections will be revealed once the results are out on October 8. Before that, the analyses of the voting patterns and impact of the parties' campaigns will be done with the Haryana Exit Poll Results.
The election was a major showdown between the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress. The BJP faces strong resistance due to anti-incumbency, while Congress seeks to regain control of the state. While these two were the main players in this election, the Chautalas of the INLD and the JJP cannot be written off. The JJP, in fact, was the kingmaker in 2019.
However, this year, the JJP has been hit by a massive exodus of its MLAs, with 8 out of 10 quitting the party. The only MLAs left in the party were Dushyant Chautala and his mother Naina.
The Haryana Assembly elections follow shortly after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP managed to retain five of the 10 seats it won in 2019, while Congress claimed the remaining five.

Major candidates in this election include current Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, state minister Anil Vij, former wrestler Vinesh Phogat, and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
In the 2019 Assembly elections, the state saw a hung assembly, with the BJP winning 40 seats and Congress securing 31. The Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) captured 10 seats, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) managed just one. The remaining eight seats were claimed by independents and smaller parties.
The government in Haryana requires the support of 45 MLAs. After the 2019 results, the BJP entered into an alliance with the JJP, allowing Manohar Lal Khattar to continue as Chief Minister. However, this partnership fell apart in March this year, leading to Khattar’s resignation. Nayab Singh Saini was sworn in as the new Chief Minister and has been heading a minority government since May 2024, following the withdrawal of support from three independent legislators.
