By-elections Voting 2022 Live: Hello and welcome to the ABP Live blog, where you can discover all the latest news from the polling battlegrounds today. Voting is being held on Monday, December 5, for bypolls to six assembly seats in five states and the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. Bypolls to six assembly seats in five states are being held alongside the Gujarat assembly polls phase 2.
Rampur Sadar and Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh, Padampur in Odisha, Sardarshahar in Rajasthan, Kurhani in Bihar and Bhanupratappur in Chhattisgarh are the assembly seats where bypolls are being held.
Apart from the seats in Uttar Pradesh, here’s a look at the assembly constituencies going for byelections:
SARDARSHAHAR
The Sardarshahar Assembly seat in Rajasthan fell vacant after Congress MLA Bhanwar Lal Sharma passed away in October at the age of 77. The Congress’s replacement for Bhanwar Lal Sharma is his son Anil Kumar who will go up against the BJP’s Ashok Kumar, a former MLA.
The bypoll has come just a day after Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra entered its Rajasthan leg, with the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party threatening to disrupt it over the Sikar shootout.
Apart from the Congress and the BJP’s candidates, eight contestants are vying for the seat. They are Lalchand (Rashtriya Loktantrik Party), Sanwarmal Meghwal of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Parmana Ram of Indian People’s Green Party and independents Subhash Chandra, Umesh Sahu, Prem Singh, Vijay Pal Singh Sheoran, and Surendra Singh Rajpurohit.
PADAMPUR
The death of BJD legislator Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha in October at the age of 65 necessitated the Padampur seat bypoll in Odisha. The bypoll comes right after the BJD's loss to BJP in the Dhamnagar bypoll for the first time since 2009.
BHANUPRATAPPUR
Chhattisgarh’s Bhanupratappur constituency, a seat reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the Maoist-hit Kanker district, is also going for a bypoll on Monday. The seat was left vacant when Congress MLA and deputy speaker of the assembly Manoj Singh Mandavi passed away in November.
Seven candidates have submitted nominations to contest the bypoll. The Congress has fielded Mandavi’s widow Savitri and the BJP has pitted former MLA Brahmanand Netam against her.
KURHANI
Bihar, too, will host a bypoll in the Kurhani assembly constituency, which was left vacant after the disqualification of RJD MLA Anil Kumar Sahani in October. Sahani was awarded a three-year jail term for fraudulently withdrawing funds during his stint as a Rajya Sabha Member (2010-12 and 2012-18).
