Darbhanga: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Kirti Azad from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won the elections by a margin of 35043 votes. The polling / voting in Darbhanga constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 4 on 29 April. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Gopal Ji Thakur and Rashtriya Janata Dal#s Abdul Bari Siddiqui

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 22 out of the 40 parliamentary seat with 29.4 percent vote share while the Lok Janshakti Party managed to win just 6 seats with a 6.4 percent vote share.

Out of the 15 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Darbhanga, 13 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Kirti Azad of the Bharatiya Janta Party as he defeated Md. Ali Ashraf Fatmi by a margin of 35043 votes.

• 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha poll, Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate defated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate in one-sided contest. Here, RJD candidate Md. Ali Ashraf Fatmi attained 427672 votes and BJP's Kirti Azad bagged 284209 votes.
• 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate had defeated Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate by a margin of 55548 votes BJP candidate Kirti Azad had got 395549 while RJD got Md Ali Ashraf Fatmi votes.
• 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate defeated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate with a difference of 36108 votes. Here, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Md.Ali Asharaf Fatmi attained 315503 votes and Bharatiya Janta Party candidate Tara Kant Jha bagged 279395 votes
• 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha poll, JD candidate defated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate in one-sided contest. Here, JD candidate Md. Ali Ashraf Fatmi attained 321828 votes and BJP's Dhirendra Kumar Jha bagged 217807 votes.
• 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha poll, JD candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, JD candidate Md. Ali Asraf Fatmi attained 318253 votes and INC's Nagendra Jha bagged 178275 votes.
• 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, JD candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 78457 votes JD candidate Shakeeul Rahman had got 356894 while INC got Nagendra Jha (Baghant) votes.
• 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha election, LKD candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 72167 votes LKD candidate Vijay Kumar Mishra had got 224540 while INC got Hari Nath Mishra votes.
• 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated JNP(S) candidate by a margin of 58201 votes INC(I) candidate Hari Nath Mishra had got 225584 while JNP(S) got Hukmdeo Narayan Yadav votes.

सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा कि उत्तर प्रदेश में एसपी और बीएसपी में खुद अकेले लड़ने की हिम्मत नहीं हैं और उन्होंने एक दूसरे का सहारा लिया है. यूपी में अगर एसपी-बीएसपी के साथ कांग्रेस का गठबंधन होता तो बीजेपी के लिए मुश्किल खड़ी होती और उनकी सीटें कम आतीं.

सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा कि पीएम मोदी देश की दिशा के लिए अच्छे प्रतीक नहीं हैं. पीएम जो भाषा इस्तेमाल कर रहे हैं वो एक प्रधानमंत्री की भाषा नहीं है. दिवंगत और मौजूदा शख्स में फर्क होता है और पीएम को एक दिवंगत नेता के लिए इस तरह के शब्दों का इस्तेमाल नहीं करना चाहिए.

कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेता सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा कि कई बार चुनावी माहौल में ऐसा कुछ कह दिया जाता है जिसपर आपत्ति होती है, इसके लिए कोर्ट में माफी मांगी जा चुकी है. मामले को खत्म किया जाना चाहिए. हमारे नेता सच्ची बात कह जाते हैं.
