Background

Bhubaneswar: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Prasanna Kumar Patasani from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won the elections by a margin of 189477 votes. The polling / voting in Bhubaneswar constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 3 on 23 April. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Aparajita Sarangi and Biju Janata Dal#s Arup Mohan Patnaik

Bhubaneswar 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Biju Janata Dal won 20 out of the 21 parliamentary seat with 44.1 percent vote share while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win just 1 seats with a 21.5 percent vote share.

The total voter turnout was 58.37% Lok Sabha percent with 57.90% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes. Meanwhile, 58.94% Lok Sabha percent of the women voters cast their votes and 8140 Lok Sabha voters pressed on the NOTA

Out of the 11 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Bhubaneswar, 9 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Prasanna Kumar Patasani of the Biju Janata Dal as he defeated Prithiviraj Harichandan by a margin of 189477 votes.

  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha poll, Biju Janata Dal candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJD candidate Prasanna Kumar Patasani attained 437762 votes and INC's Soumya Ranjan Patnaik bagged 325483 votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Biju Janata Dal candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJD candidate Prasanna Kumar Patasani attained 414429 votes and INC's Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj bagged 180468 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha poll, Biju Janata Dal candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJD candidate Prasamna Kumar Patasani attained 378849 votes and INC's Saumya Ranjan Pattanaik bagged 250941 votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Communist Party of India candidate by a margin of 78419 votes INC candidate Soumya Ranjan Pattnaik had got 298289 while CPM got Sivaji Patnaik votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Communist Party of India and Indian National Congress here Communist Party of India candidate defeated his Indian National Congress counterpart with a difference of 7981 votes.
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha poll, Communist Party of India candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, CPM candidate Sivaji Patnaik attained 332005 votes and INC's Bipin Dash bagged 186659 votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Communist Party of India candidate by a margin of 89854 votes INC candidate Chintamoni Panigrahi had got 237716 while CPM got Sivaji Patnaik votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC(I) candidate Chintamani Panigrahi attained 187144 votes and CPM's Shivaji Pattanaik bagged 54527 votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Communist Party of India and INC here Communist Party of India candidate defeated his INC counterpart with a difference of 5469 votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated UTC candidate by a margin of 73694 votes INC candidate Chintamani Panigrahi had got 125646 while UTC got Bibudhendra Misra votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPI candidate with a difference of 20731 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader C. Panigrahi attained 79899 votes and CPI candidate P. Patnaik bagged 59168 votes
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated PSP candidate with a difference of 23953 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Raja Purna Chandra Deo Bhanj attained 88340 votes and PSP candidate Nishamani Khuntia bagged 64387 votes
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPI candidate with a difference of 27348 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Nrusinha Charan Samantasinhar attained 86487 votes and CPI candidate Ramchandra Ram bagged 59139 votes
