Jamia Millia Islamia University has established three new departments, including the Department of Medical Sciences, increasing the total number of departments at the university to 48. These new departments include the Department of Law under the Faculty of Law, the Department of Dental Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences, as reported by news agency ANI. University officials said that no new courses will be introduced under these departments. According to Jamia Registrar Nazim Jafri, although law, dental and medical sciences courses already exist at the university, dedicated departments for these disciplines were previously lacking.

"We already have faculty but there were no departments. So we have created new departments. This is for streamlining the courses and departments. We made amendments to the statute," Jafri said.

As per the official order dated March 13, the university said, "...President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has been pleased to accord her kind assent for amendments/additions to the existing Statute 20 for the creation of three new Departments..."

At the university, there are a total of 48 departments distributed among 11 faculties. Each department comprises the following members:

1. Teachers of the Department: Faculty members responsible for conducting lectures and academic activities within the department.
2. Researchers: Individuals engaged in academic research within the department.
3. Dean of the Faculty or Deans of the Faculties: Academic leaders overseeing the respective faculties to which the departments belong.
4. Honorary Professors (if any attached to the Department): Distinguished scholars or experts holding honorary positions within the department to contribute to academic endeavors.
5. Department Members: Additional staff, including administrative personnel and support staff, associated with the department's activities.

Additionally, each department is led by a Head of the Department, whose appointment is based on the statutes of the university. The Head of the Department plays a crucial role in the administration, coordination, and development of the department's academic programs and activities.
