IITs And IIMs Advised To Turn Multi-Disciplinary: Dharmendra Pradhan

The Union Education Minister made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration event of the Odisha Research Centre.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that the central government has advised all IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) to go multi-disciplinary, looking beyond their respective specialisations. The remarks from the Union Minister came while speaking at the inauguration event of the Odisha Research Centre on Sunday. Speaking at the event, the Union minister said that the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) lays a strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary educational approaches, and IITs and IIMs will also start venturing into this direction, news agency PTI reported. 

Odisha governor Raghubar Das and Chhattisgarh governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, and Dharmendra Pradhan, jointly inauguratedthe inauguration event. The centre is aimed at conducting research in various domains including art, culture, archaeology, tradition and literature, sociology of Odisha, political process and political culture, agriculture, commerce, business and industry, development trends of contemporary Odisha, science and technology and healthcare, and future technology. Besides, the centre will also focus on smart cities, climate change, protection of the environment, sustainable development, semiconductors, rare earths and advanced minerals, Pradhan said.

The Union Education Minister further stated that by 2036, when Odisha would celebrate 100 years of its formation, and in 2047, when the nation would observe 100 years of its independence, the ORC (Odisha Research Centre) would draft a roadmap for the development of Odisha and its Odia language. 

The Odisha Research Centre has come into existence with the collaborative efforts of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Indian Knowledge Systems Division, Ministry of Education, IIM Sambalpur, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bhubaneswar. At the heart of the centre lies the objective of developing epistemological frameworks to explore and look into the varied and nuanced dimensions of Odisha's rich history, vibrant culture, economy and society.
