IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus: Admission Process 2023-24 For Two Full-Time Programs Begins, Classes From October

Interested candidates can apply for IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus Admissions 2023 on iitm.ac.in/zanzibar, till August 5, 2023.

The first ever overseas IIT Campus, the IIT Madras Campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania has started the admission process for its first 2023-24 academic batch. In a press release issued by the IIT Madras today in Delhi, the premier institution said that it will be offering two full-time courses at the Zanzibar campus initially: Four-Year BS in Data Science & AI, and a Two-Year M.Tech in Data Science & AI. The total academic intake for 2023-24 batch shall be 70, with 50 students in the undergradute BS programs, and 20 in the Postgraduate M.Tech program. The first international IIT campus will spread across an area of 200-acres on Zanzibar island, and the master plan of the campus is being developed by IIT Madras experts. 

IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus: Admission Process

The admission process for both the programs at the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus is underway, and classes are scheduled to begin from October this year, the press release added. The admission process for the IIT Madras Zanzibar will be in line with the IITM Senate-approved admission process for international students. Interested and eligible candidates will be first required to appear for a screening test developed by IIT Madras experts, followed by an interview. Interested candidates can apply for admissions at the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus on the official website - iitm.ac.in/zanzibar. 

As per the official schedule published on the official website, the last date to apply for admissions for the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus is August 5, 2023. The entrance test will be conducted on September 3, while shortlisted candidates will be called for interviews from September 10 to 15. The final merit list of selected candidates for admissions will be released on September 20, 2023.

IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus: Tuition Fee And Scholarship

The IIT Madras has also released the fee and scholarship scheme for students at its IIT Zanzibar campus. The tuition fee of the Four-Year BS in Data Science & AI program at the IIT Zanzibar would be USD 12,000 per year, while the tuition fee for the Two-Year M.Tech in Data Science & AI program shall be USD 4,000 per year. Candidates must note that the tuition fee for both the programs do not include accommodation costs, and they will be required to pay additionally for the same after admissions. 

However, the new IIT Madras campus at Zanzibar, also has attractive scholarships in place for meritorious students. Qualifying students will be eligible for attractive scholarships which will include tuition breaks. Tuition fee waiver up to 80% will be available for meritorious candidates

“It is indeed a major milestone in this history of IIT Madras that we are establishing a campus at Zanzibar. Through this, we look forward to active participation in the future higher education initiatives at Zanzibar,” Prof V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras said while speaking at a press conference today, July 10, 2023. 

“This is the most significant step forward in the internationalization efforts of IIT Madras. A detailed strategic plan that includes increasing the number of international students, fostering meaningful and synergistic joint degree programs with international academic institutions and enhancing faculty/student mobility has been laid out by us. Opportunities for a full-fledged campus abroad were being strongly explored and it’s heartening to see the realization of these ambitions” Professor Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean (Global Engagement), IIT Madras said. 

Notably, the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, IIT Madras and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) Zanzibar- Tanzania, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the first offshore IIT campus in Zanzibar islands, Tanzania. While the IIT Madras will be finalizing the academic programs, admission process, curriculum, and pedagogical details, the operating and capital expenditure at the campus will be looked after by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania. Students enrolled in the campus will be awarded IIT Madras degrees. 

"IIT Madras is proud to bring its deep and long-term education and research strengths to East Africa. The campus is planned in similar terms as Madras, with verdant natural surroundings, state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, research facilities, and innovation centres," Prof Preeti Aghalayam, Dean of School of Social Science & Engineering, and Director-in-charge, Zanzibar Campus, IIT Madras said.
