Hindi Now Mandatory For Classes 1 To 5 In All Maharashtra Schools

Maharashtra's School Education Department said the syllabus has been redesigned in line with the National Education Policy. Many schools in Maharashtra already follow the three-language formula.

The Maharashtra government has announced that it will implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in phases starting the academic year 2025–26. The government will make Hindi a mandatory third language from classes 1 to 5 in both Marathi and English medium schools.

Highlights Of NEP 2020 Implemented In Maharashtra

This policy will be implemented from class 1 starting this academic session and will be expanded to all classes by 2028–29.

Maharashtra will adopt the 5+3+3+4 model. The curriculum will be locally developed by SCERT and Balbharti.

In Marathi and English medium schools, Hindi will be taught as a compulsory third language from classes 1 to 5.

The government aims to train 80% of teachers in new teaching methods and digital tools by the year 2025.

In an official statement, Maharashtra's School Education Department said the syllabus has been redesigned in line with the National Education Policy. Many schools in Maharashtra already follow the three-language formula. In Maharashtra, English and Marathi are mandatory subjects, so schools naturally teach three languages.

Until now, only two languages were taught in Marathi and English medium schools. Now, Hindi is being added as the third language. This policy will be implemented from the academic year 2025–26.

Under the new education policy, the State Board syllabus in Maharashtra will also be revised. These books will now be based on the NCERT syllabus. Changes will also be made to social science subjects to align with local language and geography. To ensure effective implementation of the curriculum, workshops will be organised for Anganwadi workers.
