Goa Schools To Be Closed Tomorrow Due To Heavy Rains

The Goa state education department has issued a notice directing closure of schools on July 6, 2023, following heavy rain forecast from the IMD.

The Goa state education department has announced a one-day-holiday for all schools in Goa on Thursday, July 6, 2023. The move from the state education department comes following IMD’s (Indian Meteorological Department) forecast of heavy rainfalls in Goa on Thursday, July 6, 2023. Following the forecast, Director of Education Shailesh Sinai Zingade issued a notice announcing the closure of schools on July 6. "In view of the incessant rain and alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department's Goa center predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall.... it is decided by the competent authority to declare holiday on 6th July 2023 from Std I to XII," news agency PTI, reported the official notice as saying.

Notably, heavy rains have lashed several parts of the country, especially the southern states in the past few days. The Dakshina Kannada and Udiupi districts in Karnataka have also ordered closure of schools on Thursday, July 6, in the wake of heavy rainfalls. In their order, both the district administrations have directed all educational institutions including primary and high schools, undergraduate colleges, anganwadi centres, as well as government and private-aided schools to remain shut on Thursday.

The order from the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan MP also advised parents to prevent their children from venturing into low-lying areas, lake shores, and beaches due to the prevailing weather conditions. The precautionary move from the Dakshina Kannada district administration comes following heavy rainfall forecast in the district throughout this week, with the district likely to receive rainfall between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm, between Tuesday and Saturday. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season is currently affecting the Southwest states. Prior to Goa and Karnataka, the administration in Kerala declared school holidays in various areas.
