The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) fellowship program in management has been reaffirmed by the education ministry as being equivalent to a PhD. As per a circular released by the Union Education Ministry on Monday, the fellowship program in management is considered equivalent to a PhD degree conferred by recognized Indian universities. Furthermore, the degree is accepted for eligibility in "superior posts and services" within the central government, as clarified by the ministry.

“In view of certain references regarding the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) offered in the field of Management Education by Indian Institutes of Management (llMs), this is to clarify that this programme is equivalent to the Ph.D (Doctoral) degree awarded by recognized Indian University for the purpose of employment to superior posts and services under the Central Government in the appropriate field,” the circular noted.

The following is a list of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) that have awarded the Fellowship (FPM) in various fields along with the year it was initiated:

1. Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad - Management Education (1975)
2. Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore - Management Education (1985)
3. Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta - Management Education (1985)
4. Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow - Management Education (2005)
5. Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode - Management Education (2012-13)
6. Indian Institute of Management, Indore - Management Education (2017)
7. Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai (formerly known as National Institute of Industrial Engineering - NITIE, Mumbai) - Industrial Engineering (1986)

With the enactment of the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, all IIMs have been granted academic autonomy to design and conduct courses of study, training, and research in management and related subjects, including the awarding of the Ph.D. (Doctoral) degree. The specific list of IIMs is available in the Schedule of the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, which may be subject to periodic amendments.
