The exam is held to determine the eligibility of candidates for appointment as teachers for Classes 1 to 8 in Central Government Schools such as KVS, NVS, and others.

As per the NCTE guidelines dated August 23, 2010, and July 29, 2011, one of the essential qualifications for a candidate to be eligible for appointment as a teacher is to pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) or CTET.
