Assam Proposes 10% NRI Quota In MBBS; Check Details Here

Assam government proposed to introduce a 10% quota for NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) in the MBBS program.

The state cabinet presented a proposal on Thursday to implement an annual reservation of 10% of seats in the MBBS course within state medical colleges. These seats will be allocated from the remaining seats after deducting the 15% all-India quota, central pool, North Eastern Council quota, and the Royal Government of Bhutan quota for NRIs or NRI-sponsored students who have successfully cleared the NEET-UG examination.

Additionally, the cabinet suggested an increase in reservation for six communities belonging to the OBC/MOBC category (Non-Creamy Layer) from 27% to 30%. This increase will be divided into 22 seats for the Brahmaputra Valley and 8 seats for the Barak Valley. Furthermore, the proposal includes the reservation of one seat in the BDS course for each of the following six communities: Moran, Matak, Tai Ahom, Chutia, and Koch Rajbongshi.

Another aspect of the proposal is the reservation of 10% of seats for the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) category in the MBBS course within six medical colleges: Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Jorhat, Tezpur, and Barpeta. This amendment proposal is a response to the increased number of MBBS seats available in the state's medical colleges.

The Assam Cabinet meeting has proposed the following reservation criteria for six communities of OBC (Other Backward Classes) and MOBC (More Other Backward Classes) in MBBS admissions. Currently, the number of reserved seats and the proposed number of reserved seats are as follows:
