2 Arrested In DU Student Murder Case, Police Say Accused Wanted To Avenge A Brawl

The victim, 19-year-old Nikhil Chauhan, was a first-year BA (Hons) political science student at the School of Open Learning (SOL) at Delhi University’s Aryabhatta College.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a student at South Campus, University of Delhi which took place on Sunday. A first-year student of Delhi University was allegedly stabbed to death on Sunday outside Aryabhatta College in the South Campus after he objected to a fellow student harassing his girlfriend. As per police, the accused came to seek revenge over a brawl which occurred last week, reported news agency ANI. The two that have been arrested were identified as Rahul who is a first year BA student and Haroon who is Rahul's friend and a school dropout.

Manoj C, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South West Delhi, while talking to news agency ANI said, "When Police reached there (crime scene), it was found that the victim is Nikhil Chauhan - a first-year student of the School of Open Learning. Further investigation revealed that a week ago, Chauhan had a brawl with Rahul and Yash. Yesterday, Rahul, Yash, and others came here to seek revenge. They stabbed Nikhil Chauhan. We have arrested two people - Rahul and his associate Haroon. We have identified others as well. We will arrest them too."

The DCP added, "Two persons Rahul - a 1st year BA student - and Haroon - a school dropout and friend of Rahul - have been appended. The investigation is in progress. We have identified two more persons involved in this incident."

The victim's father while talking about the call he got regarding his son getting stabbed, said, "We got a call around 12 pm that our son (Nikhil) had been stabbed and he has been admitted to a hospital. After we reached the hospital, we found that our son was dead. He was a student at Aryabhatta College." He further added that Delhi Police hasn't told him anything yet. 

Sequence Of Events

A student of SOL allegedly misbehaved with the victim's girlfriend in college around a week ago. When the victim, Nikhil Chauhan, objected to the harassment, the accused got angry and allegedly decided to take revenge, PTI cited the police as saying. Then, at around 12:30pm on Sunday, the accused and three of his associates met Chauhan outside Aryabhatta College and allegedly stabbed him in the chest. 

A police officer while talking to PTI said that the victim was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

He was a resident of Paschim Vihar and was pursuing BA (Hons) in Political Science from the School of Open Learning (SOL), reported news agency PTI.
