1 Dead, 17 Injured As Stage Collapses At Delhi's Kalkaji Mandir

One person died and 17 people were injured after a stage collapsed at a religious gathering at Delhi's Kalkaji Mandir.

At least 17 people were injured and one person died after a platform, made of wood and iron frame, at a Mata Jagran at Mahant Parisar, Kalkaji Mandir collapsed at midnight on January 27. No permission was granted for holding the event, news agency ANI reported. However, sufficient staff was deployed to maintain law and order.
 
There was a gathering of around 1500-1600 people. Crime team visited the spot. The condition of all other injured is stable, while a few suffered fractures. A case u/s 337/304A/188 IPC is being registered into the matter against the organisers, Delhi Police said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his condolences for the tragic incident that claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed yet. Kejriwal took to 'X' to share his condolences in Hindi, emphasising the need for safety protocols during large gatherings. He urged the people of Delhi to ensure safety measures are in place for any significant event to prevent such accidents.

The police reported that the incident happened during a 'jagran' at the Kalkaji temple, where approximately 1,600 people were in attendance. Notably, the event was not granted prior permission, although there were efforts to maintain order with adequate staff present. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Deo confirmed the gathering at around 1,500 to 1,600 people by 12:30 am on Sunday.

"However, sufficient staff was deployed to maintain law and order. There was a gathering of around 1,500 to 1,600 people at around 12.30 am on Sunday," Deo said.

An eye-witness, Varun told PTI, "All of sudden, the stage collapsed and those who were sitting close to the stage received injuries. The singer had left by that time." Another person present at the function said he heard a loud noise and saw people running out. "It was a stampede-like situation. Everyone was running for their lives. I was outside the temple when I got to know that the stage collapsed and some people received injuries," he told PTI.
