Delhi Unsafe For Everyone, Centre Needs To Fix Accountability Of Police: DCW Chief On Murders

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal urged the Union government to call a meeting regarding the safety of women in the national capital, stressing that the Delhi Police's accountability needs to be fixed.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal raised concerns over the law and order situation in the national capital after a woman, aged about 25, was found dead with her head battered in a park in Malviya Nagar on Friday. In another incident, a 42-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead near her house in southwest Delhi's Dabri area on Thursday. Maliwal has urged the Union government to call a meeting regarding the safety of women in the national capital, stressing that the Delhi Police's accountability needs to be fixed.

"Delhi, the national capital, is very unsafe now. Two incidents took place today in Delhi — a girl was shot in Dabri and the shooter shot himself dead. The second incident took place near Aurbindo College in broad daylight where another woman was brutally beaten to death by an iron rod. The law and order situation in Delhi is in turmoil. Delhi is the nation's capital and today the country is seeing a situation where the names of the women change but the crimes don't end," she told news agency ANI.

"For how long can this go on? Why are people not afraid of the legal system? I want to know from the Union government how many deaths will it take for them to set accountability for Delhi police. DCW is taking cognisance of these incidents and we are issuing notices for the same"

Maliwal stressed that Delhi Commission for Women ensures that the accused are arrested and the victim's family receive legal aid and compensation.

"But I want to know why are crimes still happening. So many crimes have happened from Anjali to Shraddha Walkar the most heinous of crimes have happened. But why has the Centre not called a meeting to hold accountability?" she remarked.

The DCW chief appealed to the Union govt to call a meeting at the earliest including the Delhi government and police to fix the police force's accountability. "Delhi has become very unsafe for everyone," she said.

Meanwhile, the deceased girl's father in the Malviya Nagar case demanded the death penalty for the accused as he broke down talking about his only child: "We need death penalty for the accused, nothing less. I had only one daughter…I won’t leave him."

Malviya Nagar Case: Accused Arrested, Delhi Police Reveals 'Love Angle And Denial Of Marriage' As Cause

The accused in the Malviya Nagar case has been arrested by Delhi Police. "The entire issue basically has a love angle and denial of marriage. The victim (22 years old) and the accused (28 years old) are cousins. The deceased's family had refused the boy for marriage since he was unemployed... Subsequently, the girl stopped talking to him and blocked him. The boy was mentally disturbed," Chandan Chowdhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Delhi told ANI.

"He was not receiving marriage proposals and his younger brother's marriage was fixed... He was spiteful about it and therefore committed this crime today... He worked as a delivery boy and knew where the girl was taking coaching from. The accused has been identified as Irfan," the South Delhi DCP informed.

Earlier in the day, the DCW has taken suo-moto cognisance of the murder of a 25-year-old girl in Malviya Nagar, Delhi."As per reports, the girl was allegedly attacked with an iron rod by a man near Aurobindo College, Malviya Nagar resulting in the death of the girl on the spot itself. The accused is reportedly on the run. This is a very serious matter," a notice addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, District South, Delhi Police read.

The Commission sought a copy of the FIR registered in the matter, details of the accused arrested in the matter, and Detailed action taken report in the matter by July 31.
