Man Who Fell Into Borewell At Delhi Jal Board Plant Dies, Body Retrieved: Police

Delhi Minister Aitishi confirmed that the man who fell into the borewell at Delhi Jal Board's sewage treatment plant has died.

The body of a young man who fell into a borewell at Delhi Jal Board's sewage treatment plant was retrieved around 3 pm on Sunday, the police informed confirming that he died. The Police disclosed that efforts are underway to identify the deceased. Earlier in the day, Water Minister Atishi visited the Delhi Jal Board water treatment plant in Keshopur where the incident occurred. She assured that action would be taken against the responsible official at the sewage treatment plant. 

"I have ordered all borewells in Delhi to be inspected in the next 48 hours, and action will be taken against the official who was responsible for this STP," Atishi told news agency PTI.

Atishi highlighted that the area surrounding the borewell was securely locked when rescue teams arrived, raising questions about how the young man accessed the area. "It wasn't a child who fell inside; it's an adult man. Police are looking into the matter now," she stated.

Delhi Minister Atishi Writes To Chief Secretary Over Keshopur Borewell Incident

In a letter to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Atishi directed him to conduct a time-bound inquiry into the incident and take strong and exemplary action against any officers found responsible and ensure that all government and private abandoned borewells be welded and sealed immediately. She also sought a compliance report within 48 hours.

The Delhi Minister also confirmed the man's demise in a post on X stating, "With great sorrow, I am sharing the news that the man who fell into the borewell has been found dead by the rescue team. May the Almighty grant him a place in His divine abode. According to initial information, the deceased person was around 30 years old. The investigation into how he entered the borewell chamber and fell inside will be conducted by the police."

"I express my gratitude to the NDRF team, who made every possible effort in the rescue operation for hours," she further wrote.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) were deployed for the rescue efforts. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer confirmed that the police received a PCR call reporting the incident and began investigating the matter, PTI reported.
