The streets of Delhi witnessed heated confrontations on Tuesday as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mobilized their supporters over the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal. AAP leaders and workers attempted to march towards the Prime Minister's residence, while BJP staged counter-protests demanding the resignation of the Delhi Chief Minister.
The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a petition filed by Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection to a money-laundering case linked with an alleged excise policy scam.
While in ED custody, Kejriwal issued directives to Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj to address the shortages of medicines and diagnostic tests in mohalla clinics and hospitals across the city. This move marks the second set of directives issued by the Chief Minister during his custody.
According to sources within the Enforcement Directorate cited by PTI, the agency will investigate whether these directives comply with the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court's orders issued to both the ED and Kejriwal during his custody.
As AAP leaders and supporters gathered near Patel Chowk Metro Station to proceed towards the Prime Minister's residence in Lok Kalyan Marg, AAP leader Gopal Rai accused the central government of imposing widespread restrictions, seemingly turning Delhi into a "police state".
Security measures were escalated in various parts of the capital, including around the Prime Minister's residence and Central Delhi, with the deployment of police personnel and paramilitary forces.
During the protests, approximately 100 individuals, including AAP leader Somnath Bharti, Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla, and Punjab Minister Harjot Singh Bains, were detained by the police. They were later released.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had to temporarily close the gates of Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station due to security concerns, along with two gates of Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat metro stations, which were later reopened after nine hours.
Rai warned the Centre that the movement against Kejriwal's arrest would persist despite the use of police force, alleging that women workers of AAP were forcefully detained.
AAP members gathered near the Patel Chowk metro station, chanting slogans in support of Kejriwal. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar had earlier warned that demonstrators at the chowk would be promptly detained.
Meanwhile, the BJP staged a protest near the Delhi Secretariat, demanding Kejriwal's resignation. Police detained at least 57 BJP members, including Delhi unit chief Virendra Sachdeva, who were attempting to march towards the Delhi Secretariat. Water cannons were employed to disperse the crowd.
The petition filed by Kejriwal seeking his immediate release on the grounds of "illegal" arrest and subsequent remand to the ED is scheduled for hearing before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma of the Delhi High Court at 10:30 am.
Prominent leaders from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) coalition are expected to participate in the forthcoming mega rally, announced Rai during a press conference on Tuesday.
