4 Injured As Man With Axe Attacks Chinese Restaurants In New Zealand, Held

A man carrying an axe entered three Chinese restaurants on Monday night in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland and injured four people.

A man carrying an axe entered three Chinese restaurants on Monday night in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland and injured four people, news agency Reuters reported citing authorities and local media. All the victims were admitted to the North Shore and Auckland Hospital in Auckland. One of them was discharged and three were in stable condition, Reuters reported citing spokespersons of respective hospitals on Tuesday.

The man went into three Chinese restaurants — Zhangliang Malatang, Yues Dumpling Kitchen, and Maya Hotpot — and randomly attacked people with an axe around 9 PM on Monday night, Reuters reported citing local media. Speaking to Radio New Zealand, a local news organisation, a witness stated that she was eating at Maya Hotpot with a friend when a man approached her friend with an axe.

She said everyone in the restaurant then stood up and someone shouted “What are you going do? Why are you doing it?” before he hit her friend again. According to Reuters, New Zealand Police said they had arrested a 24-year-old man and he will be produced in court on Tuesday on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The police also said that further charges are expected. Police did not give a motive for the attack.

In another incident, a student from Uganda’s Mpondwe town recalled how he miraculously survived a night-time attack on his school dormitory by suspected Islamist rebels. Julius Isingoma said he covered himself in the blood of his dead colleagues to hide himself from the perpetrators as 40 people were killed in the attack. "I smeared the blood of my dead colleagues in my mouth, ears and on my head so that the attackers would think I was dead," Julius told BBC at Bwera General Hospital in Kasese district.
