UP: Siblings, Relatives Try To 'Marry' To Reap Benefits Of Govt Scheme In Moradabad

A brother and sister as well as an uncle and his niece were caught trying to apply for the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme.

In an attempt to gain Rs 35,000 and additional gifts provided by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme a brother and sister as well as an uncle and his niece were preparing to marry each other in UP’s Moradabad.

According to News18, this attempt to fraud the system was found when these individuals applied for the scheme for the financial support and gifts offered by the government. When investigated, the authorities were shocked at their discovery of the unusual family relationships involved.

The fraudulent applications were cancelled after thorough scrutiny. The authorities are investigating further into the matter.

As per the report, 3,451 couples from Moradabad are likely to participate in the scheme, which is meant for economically disadvantaged families. The government has received 8,519 applications, which are undergoing phased verification, and several instances of fraud have already been uncovered in the preliminary investigations.

After the discovery of the fraudulent applications, the complaints have reached the government level. Several concerns have also been brought to the attention of the District Social Welfare Department.

As per News18, the District Social Welfare Officer, Shailendra Gautam, the applications are being carefully assessed before the upcoming mass marriage event in January. He also stressed the fake applicants will face appropriate action.

Earlier, the scheme which is meant for unprivileged women, had come under fire following allegations of substandard gifts and fake jewellery being distributed during the ceremony here. As per PTI, the district magistrate has ordered a probe into the matter and said strict action will be taken against the persons responsible for the distribution of alleged poor-quality gifts.

District Magistrate Ravish Kumar Gupta, upon receiving complaints, said that a thorough investigation would be conducted. He expressed displeasure over the functioning of the district social welfare officer and promised strict action against those responsible for compromising the quality of the gifts.
