The building, located on Rabindra Sarani, housed wooden equipment. Pandey said that some electrical shops have been affected due to the fire.
No casualty has been reported so far, officials said. The fire is likely to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Thick black smoke has engulfed the area, reducing visibility and complicating the firefighting efforts.
In a similar incident last month, a fire broke out at the Sialdah ESI Hospital in Kolkata. According to officials, the incident had occurred in the male surgery department on the first floor and the smoke caused a cancer patient to suffocate and lose his life.
