A 45-year-old homeless man was killed after being allegedly struck by a car and dragged for about 10 meters in Delhi's Connaught Place, officials reported on Saturday. The driver, who fled the scene after the incident on Wednesday, was arrested the very next day.


The victim, identified as Lekhraj, was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. Police traced the driver, Shivam Dubey, 28, through CCTV footage.

According to PTI, officials stated that Dubey, a native of Madhya Pradesh, had borrowed a car from a friend in Mahipalpur, South Delhi, to visit someone in Connaught Place.


Around 3:25 pm, while crossing the road near Barakhamba Radial Road at Connaught Place's outer circle, Dubey allegedly hit Lekhraj, where Lekhraj got stuck under the car's wheels but the driver kept driving the vehicle, officials added.


Police Catch Driver Using CCTV footage


Lekhraj was left on the road while Dubey quickly departed the scene after being dragged for around 10 meters. The officer added that once Lekhraj was taken to the hospital, the doctor pronounced him dead.






After the incident, Dubey returned the borrowed car to his friend. Police, using CCTV footage, identified the car's owner and subsequently arrested Dubey, charging him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The car involved has been impounded, and further investigations are underway.


A total of 518 people lost their lives in 511 fatal accidents in the national capital as of May 15, according to data from Delhi Police. This marks a decrease from 552 deaths in 544 crashes during the same period last year. Most of these fatal accidents occurred on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and GT Karnal Road, as per the police data.
