Cuttack, Odisha: In a shocking incident that took place in Odisha, a doctor has been booked for allegedly raping two women patients at a premier state-run hospital just as the country is witnessing nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. At present, the accused has been admitted to the ICU of the hospital after he sustained injuries as he was allegedly roughed up by the patients' relatives.
The resident doctor allegedly raped two women patients at the SCB Medical College and Hospital, which is considered as a premier healthcare centre in Odisha, police said on Tuesday, as reported by news agency PTI.
The incident allegedly occurred on Sunday when the women went to the cardiology department of the government hospital for an echocardiogram test.
The two patients lodged a complaint against the doctor at the Mangalabag police station in Cuttack, following which a case was registered.
"A complaint was lodged on 11th August at Manglabag police station in which it was said that a woman went to a cardiology doctor Dr. Dilbag Singh Thakur, to get the echo test done. The Doctor tested both patients, but as per the standard SOP, at the time of the test, a lady attendant should be present who was not there that day... While performing the tests, the doctor sexually assaulted both the patients. The accused has also been arrested and presented to the Court..."
"We will record statements of the victims, and take further steps based on the evidence collected during the investigation." Mishra added.
The Health and Family Welfare Department has also set up a three-member inquiry committee to probe into the allegations against the resident doctor.
On the accused being beaten up by the victims' relatives, Mishra said police were aware of the incident but had not received any formal complaint in this regard.
"Cases have been registered against the doctor and an investigation has been started," the ADCP said.
Meanwhile, there has been no comment from hospital authorities regarding the issue yet.
On August 9, the woman trainee doctor, who was on night duty, was found dead at a seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This incident sparked a massive uproar nationwide as the victim's parents and opposition said the matter was being supressed and shown as a case of suicide, but was instead a case of "rape and murder".
