A man in Assam's Cachar district raped a woman in his neighbourhood and poured acid on her in front of her two children, said the police on Wednesday. The incident took place on January 22 when the 28-year-old accused barged into the victim's house.
According to the police, the accused engaged in a verbal spat with the 30-year-old woman during which the victim had snubbed her neighbour. Hours later, the accused stormed into the woman's home when her husband was away, reported NDTV.
The victim's husband, when returned home, found his wife on the floor with her hands, feet, and mouth tied. An acid-like substance was also found to be poured on her body, the officials said.

“We rushed her to a nearby government hospital but the doctors asked us to take her to SMCH. We called the police but they asked us to visit the police station the next day,” he said.
The victim was rushed to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital where her condition is said to be critical, according to officials.
The accused is currently absconding and the police have filed a case of sexual assault based on the complaint by the husband and are on the lookout for the accused.
The medical reports are also awaited to ascertain whether the woman was raped.
The case was registered on the basis of the information provided by the victim's eldest child, a six-year-old boy.

"My two kids saw the entire torture and they are also traumatised," said the husband, reported Hindustan Times. He said that the accused had asked for the phone number of the victim which she blatantly refused and told him to leave. The suspect, who eventually left, threatened to harm her.
Dholai police station officer-in-charge Jonpan Bey said the operation is underway to nab the accused and added that the victim is undergoing treatment. "We'll record her statement after consultation with the doctors," he said.
The victim's husband said the accused has targeted women in the past as well, asking them to share numbers and also writing objectionable things about women. On multiple occasions, such issues were settled by local people by conducting meetings but he didn’t stop all these activities,” he said.
