The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has announced May 20 as a trading holiday in Mumbai in wake of the general elections, as per a notification issued by the exchange. This decision aligns with the guidelines outlined in the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, where local governments declare a voting holiday on polling days.

In a circular released on April 8 (Monday), the NSE said, "The exchange notifies Monday, May 20, 2024, as a trading holiday on account of Parliamentary Elections in Mumbai. Members are requested to take note of the same."

The Election Commission previously unveiled a five-phase polling schedule for Maharashtra's 48 parliamentary constituencies, with the last phase scheduled for May 20. This final phase of polling in Maharashtra will encompass various key constituencies, including Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, Mumbai North, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North East, Mumbai South, Mumbai South Central, Mumbai North Central, and Palghar.

Aside from the May 20 market holiday, trading will also be suspended on May 1 due to Maharashtra Day. Preceding these closures, the markets will observe holidays on Id-ul-Fitr on April 11 (Thursday) and Ram Navami on April 17.

In response to queries regarding the closure of the stock market for Gudi Padwa 2024, it has been confirmed that trading will continue on April 9 (Tuesday) despite the celebration of Gudi Padwa, or the Marathi New Year, across Maharashtra. Gudi Padwa is not listed as a trading holiday in the comprehensive list of Indian stock market holidays for 2024, available on the official websites of both the BSE and the NSE.
