Oil prices have reached new record levels. In Delhi, the price of both fuels has increased by 35-35 paise today.

According to petroleum company Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), petrol price in the national capital today rose by 35 paise, to Rs 107.59 per litre from Rs 107.24 on Saturday. At the same time, diesel price has increased from Rs 95.97 per litre to Rs 96.32 per litre.

Petrol and diesel prices in the capital have increased almost daily this week. Amid the festive season, transportation is getting expensive due to the hike in petrol and diesel rates, which is directly affecting the pockets of the general public.

Apart from Delhi, there are many states where the price of petrol and diesel has reached above Rs 100. The price of petrol in Mumbai is Rs 113.12 and the price of diesel is Rs 104.00 per litre. In Chennai too, petrol is Rs 104.22 a litre and diesel is Rs 100.25 a litre. The price of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 107.78 while the price of diesel is Rs 99.08 per litre.

Notably, from the month of May 2020 till now, there has been an increase of about Rs 36 per litre in petrol prices in the country. At the same time, diesel prices have increased by Rs 26.58 per litre in these 18 months.

Petrol Excise Duty Not Decreasing

The government had increased the excise duty on petrol and diesel after the international crude oil prices fell to a record low of $ 19 per barrel. However, since then the international crude oil prices have improved to $85 per barrel, but the excise duty on petrol remains at Rs 32.9 per litre. Similarly, excise duty on diesel remains at Rs 31.8 per litre.

The rising fuel prices in the country are not going to come down immediately. The central government is in talks with several oil-exporting countries on the issue of supply and demand of oils but there is no possibility of immediate relief in prices.

On Monday, a source informed news agency ANI that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas recently raised concerns about the matter of pricing, supply and demand of oils to the major oil-producing countries.

"As crude oil prices rise internationally, the petroleum ministry has called on the energy ministries of many countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Russia and others," the source was quoted by ANI in its report.
