GST Collection Grows 6.5 Per Cent YoY In September, Hits Rs 1.73 Lakh Crore

GST Collection in September dropped slightly, down from Rs 1.75 lakh crore in August, marks a marginal decline in monthly revenue and the slowest pace of growth in GST collections in over three years

GST Collection: India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for September reached Rs 1.73 lakh crore, reflecting a 6.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth, according to official data released on October 1. In the same month last year, GST collections stood at Rs 1.63 lakh crore. However, the collections in September dropped slightly, down from Rs 1.75 lakh crore in August. This marks a marginal decline in monthly revenue and the slowest pace of growth in GST collections in over three years.

The GST revenue in September registered a 6.3 per cent year-on-year increase, with Rs 1.62 lakh crore collected in the same month last year. This marks the second consecutive month of single-digit growth in collections, the lowest rate of growth in 39 months. In contrast, June saw GST collections expand at a rate of 7.7 per cent.

Average GST collections for the second quarter of FY25 stood at Rs 1.77 lakh crore, down from Rs 1.86 lakh crore recorded in the first quarter. However, September marked the seventh consecutive month where collections exceeded Rs 1.7 lakh crore. For the first half of FY25, India’s GST collections reached Rs 10.87 lakh crore, a 9.5 per cent increase compared to the first half of FY24.

In another development, the government has set April 1, 2025, as the deadline for the anti-profiteering clause under GST. From October 1, 2023, pending complaints under the anti-profiteering provisions will be handled by the Principal Bench of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) instead of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), according to a notification from the GST policy wing.

These measures come following the GST Council's recommendations during its 53rd meeting on June 22, 2023, where amendments to Section 171 and Section 109 of the CGST Act, 2017, were proposed. The council recommended setting April 1, 2025, as the sunset date for receiving new anti-profiteering complaints.

After April 1, 2025, consumers will no longer be able to file complaints against companies for failing to pass on GST rate cuts. However, complaints lodged before this date will be handled by the Principal Bench of the GSTAT until a final decision is made.
