Background

Budget Session 2022 HIGHLIGHTS: Today's session in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is expected to be stormy as fuel prices have increased by 80 paise/l for a second consecutive day. On Tuesday, opposition leaders walked out of the Rajya Sabha after it raised objections to rising prices of fuel and demanded a discussion on the same.

Opposition parties including Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena and Congress created pandemonium as the Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected their plea to hold discussion over rising fuel prices under Rule 267.

Trinamool Congress leader trooped into the well of the Upper House and started sloganeering against the government by showing placards soon. As the Opposition party MPs did not consider Chairman's request to allow the functioning of the House and begin the Zero Hour, Naidu adjourned the House till 12. The ruckus started soon after the papers were laid on the table and Naidu addressed the House over World Water Day.

Meanwhile, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that India's road infrastructure will be like that of the United States by 2024. Replying to the debate on the demands for grants related to his ministry in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari said that roads were connected with the prosperity of the country and good road infrastructure helps bring down the cost of logistics which was vital for economic development.

He referred to former US President John F Kennedy who had said that American roads are not good because America is rich, but America is rich because American roads are good. "To make India prosperous, I will ensure that before December 2024, India's road infrastructure will be like that of America," Gadkari said.
